Housing Applications

Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program Waiting List is CLOSED.

Spartanburg Housing accepted applications on August 1, 2016 to August 12, 2016 from elderly, near elderly and disabled households ONLY.

How long will the application process take?

It will take approximately 6-8 weeks for us to process all the applications received.

How do I know if I am on to the waiting list?

All completed application will be placed on the waiting list. Those who did not complete a full application will be notified and will need to apply again when the waiting list is open. Please do not call SHA for status information. If your legal or mailing address changes, you must notify SHA in writing to maintain your wait list status.

What do I do next?

You will receive a notice indicating that you were placed on the HCV wait list. Applicants are required to inform SHA in writing of changes in address. Applicants are also required to respond to requests from SHA to update information on their application. Failure to respond by the specified deadline will result in withdrawal of the application without further notice.
All contact made with applicants is by mail. All returned mail or mail not forwarded by the post office for which SHA has not received an address change and SHA cannot locate the applicant, the application will be withdrawn from the wait list.

Families will be notified in writing when they have reached the top of the waiting list. At this time, they will be asked to provide information on their income and family composition to verify their eligibility for the program.

How long do I have to wait for an eligibility appointment?

There are several factors that influence how long a person may have to wait:

  1. Your placement on the waiting list.
  2. Funding availability. Each PHA receives a specific number of vouchers. No new vouchers are received from HUD; therefore, SHA can only offer housing assistance when someone leaves the program.

The combination of these factors determines movement of the waiting list. Our best estimate for the wait time is one to five years.

SHA Application Lottery will be effective October 1, 2016.

All remaining application on the Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list will be placed on the list utilizing a lottery system to place applicants on the list. SHA will conduct a lottery to randomly assign a lottery number to all pre-applications in the preliminary applicant pool. The pre-applications will then be placed on the HCV waiting list in sequential order based on the assigned lottery number, and then sorted by preference(s) to determine the position on the waiting list.

Please do not call SHA for status information.
