How to Prep Your Home Flyer

Info for Residents Flyer

On November 30, 2016, Secretary Castro announced that HUD would be requiring all Public Housing Authorities to provide smoke-free environments for their residents, staff and visitors.

Developed by CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health, the following flyers are  (available in English and Spanish), encourages residents to use the new rule as an opportunity to quit smoking. Specifically, it highlights:

  • The dangers of secondhand smoke and the importance of protecting non-smoking family members, friends and neighbors.
  • The benefits of quitting smoking.
  • How residents can easily access the FREE resources to help quit smoking.

The HUD smoke-free policy is an opportunity to improve health and save lives.  It will improve the health of all residents; reducing the smoking among those who use cigarettes, encouraging more smokers to quit, and eliminating secondhand smoke a known health hazard for non-smokers. Many  residents are especially affected by secondhand smoke, including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities and chronic diseases.  We hope to increase the health benefit of the new rule by working together to help smokers who live and work in public housing go smoke-free when their buildings do.

Promoting quitting and giving smokers resources to quit successfully can smooth the way for implementation.  Helping residents and staff quit smoking reduces possible compliance issues.

State and local health departments can also help your properties prepare to go smokefree.  If you aren’t already in touch, we strongly encourage you to reach out to them.
